Here's something else a tad weird Barb. You know the prob with the back button and that we were told by HLD that it was to do with our IE's? Well, I never did do anything to rectify it but that problem has miraculously disappeared!

Strange eh?

Very strange indeed Terry because the back button problem only started for me a couple of weeks ago

****************

Exactly and I am not upgrading to IE 6 when A) the one I've got works just fine on all other sites and B) I didn't have any problems there until the most recent upgrade of said site.

<font size="3" face="Tempus sans ITC, Papyrus,Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">It is an unfortnate tendency among techie people and webdesigners to blame the user for any problems that the user is having. I often see that attitude at a forum that I use for technical help and questions in my site design. I'll post a 'how can I do such and thus' or 'my viewers are having this problem....' question, and someone will start their answer with "have you viewer use such and thus browsers" or monitor settings or whatever applies to my question.

My theory is ........... design for the viewer. But that's harder to do. If they design for the viewer, they have to take the extra time to test their site on several different browsers and monitor settings. Then they have to find ways to fix the resulting problems that are found (more time and effort). It also limits them from using the newest, hotest technology if the viewers aren't able to use it. (I once had to drop something from my site because it did baaaaaad things when someone tried to view it using an AOL browser.)

So my point here is that the problems you describe aren't limited to the designer and site being discussed. But I personally think it's poor web design and that anyone doing that is simply taking the easy way out.

(Btw, does anyone here remember the early problems with Savagefan and it's design? I think that was the same issue. The designers were working on state of the art computers and monitors, but most of the fans didn't have that. As a result, the site didn't work for them. Finally, the web designers had to make changes to accomodate fans.)

<font size="3" face="Tempus sans ITC, Papyrus,Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">i think the problem stems from the fact that the
rate of information is exceeding the manpower
it takes to compute it all.

just like with HB, there are lots of bugs and
issues that still need to be worked out... but
the end-user's desire to have X feature (right
here, right now) causes difficulties in bridging
the gap between performance and progress.

you don't have the time to establish the fix
to current bugs and issues when you are busy
trying to satisfy the masses with more progressive
features. by the time we add one new feature,
we still have other bugs and issues to work out
from the last known configurations that were put
on the backburner while establishing the new
feature.

in addition to that, while trying to fix the
last problems... the new feature creates more
problems because the last issues aren't worked out.

i feel like i'm rambling... but i hope someone,
somewhere understood what i said....

Thanks so much for all that info Dyan and Shatzy....very interesting!

Shatzy I read about the mozilla browsers in a computer magazine and then decided to install it and give it a go, specifically to see how it performed on the one site. Mozilla's website is here:
http://www.mozilla.org/
I also discovered it has a pop up blocker..very useful
